Elaine Sims

University of Michigan Health System Gifts of Art Program

Elaine Sims is the Director of the University of Michigan Health System's Gifts of Art program. She has worked in arts in healthcare since 1990. Her areas of special expertise include the visual and performing arts, healing gardens, caring for the caregiver initiatives as well as the full spectrum of arts in healthcare offerings including art cart programs, bedside music, bedside art, creative writing, institution-wide art making projects, medical school arts curriculum, and running a full medical center orchestra. The Gifts of Art program maintains nine changing exhibit galleries mounting over 50 shows a year, including an annual employee art exhibition as well as building a vibrant permanent art collection. Weekly public concerts, bedside musicians, and live music in waiting areas and the cafeteria round out the musical offerings. The Life Sciences Orchestra presents two free public concerts each year, providing a creative outlet for caregivers, scientists, staff, and students. Sims is a consultant for the SAHCS consulting service and speaks regularly at conferences. She was a charter member of the Ann Arbor Commission for Art in Public Places, and enjoys collaborating with University of Michigan and community partners in exploring, promoting, and expanding the world of arts in healthcare, education, and community life.
