Philosophy of Music Therapy at All Children's Hospital

Music Therapy at All Children's Hospital is an integral part of the care of hospitalized children and their families. Because music is enjoyed by children in their daily lives, affects mental, physical and emotional functioning, and provides for immediate success, it is a valuable tool in supporting the treatment and recovery experience. Through Music Therapy interventions, children find comfort in their surroundings, feel safe and secure, and trust that their concerns will be heard and their needs will be met. Music provides children relief from pain, discomfort and stress, energizes children to participate in the healing process, and motivates them to continue their developmental paths. Music is a positive medium for children to learn coping strategies for hospitalization and illness, and for functioning in the various roles of their lives. Through the process of Music Therapy, family members participate in the care of their children. Music Therapy supports the bonds between children and their families so the hospital experience is as positive and as successful as possible. This purpose is achieved through the utilization of behavioral, cognitive and biomedical theories.
