Pathways Hospice accepts one music therapy intern per six-month training session. Sessions run January through June and July through December. We accept applications within a year of the desired start date. We give preference to Master's candidates or Bachelor's candidates with clinical experience and proven self-direction. This internship entails a 40-hour workweek. Basic Responsibilities As part of Pathways Hospice's multi-disciplinary team, the music therapy intern provides support services to participating clients and family members in all settings. Supervision The music therapy intern reports to a Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC). Internship program components - Orientation
- Observing and shadowing
- Co-leading and leading music therapy sessions
- Keeping records and progress notes
- Attending staff and in-service meetings
- Cultivating professional growth and increased self-awareness
- Meeting weekly with the supervising MT-BC
- Receiving constructive feedback on observed intern sessions
- Building administrative skills
- Fulfilling special requirements including a research or special project of the intern's choice related to hospice
Activities - Attends new employee training session to develop understanding of Pathways Hospice's approach and philosophy toward patient/client care.
- Identifies and utilizes available resource materials; this includes ongoing review of the Policies & Procedures Manual for Music Therapy.
- Together with the supervising MT-BC, plans professional goals, objectives and expectations for the internship experience.
- Participates in weekly supervisory meeting with MT-BC; meetings include discussion of intern's progress, challenges and overall accomplishments to date.
- As appropriate and directed by Pathways Hospice staff, provides services and emotional support to clients/families in need.
- As appropriate and directed by Pathways Hospice staff, provides bereavement support to clients/families; this may include performance at a client's funeral.
- Maintains close communication with team members; provides accurate/timely information regarding client care and documentation of all client/family contacts.
- Provides assistance to MT-BC as requested.
- Attends pertinent Pathways Hospice meetings as schedule allows.
Qualifications - Completed undergraduate or equivalent Music Therapy program.
- Demonstrated skills and sensitivities to aid and assist clients/families through stressful situations.
- Understanding of and agreement to uphold all professional ethics and requirements when working as a representative of Pathways Hospice.
Transportation The position necessitates a personal car to visit clients; Pathways Hospice pays mileage at the current IRS rate. Application Deadlines Applications for music therapy internships beginning in the summer are due by the end of February. Applications for the winter internships are due by the end of August. We personally interview final internship candidates.
